Balanced Literacy Program

Our Balanced Literacy Program has been given a tremendous boost by the edition of an on-staff literacy consultant. 

As part of the program, a different children’s author will be the focus of each month.  Students learn about the authors’ backgrounds, where they live and how they grew up, and all through that month a theme corresponding to the author’s writings and life is highlighted.  Pre-writing and pre-reading skills are emphasized as the children try to predict what will happen in the story through the cover and illustrations, then read the story to find out how their predictions match up.  Students become their own illustrators using sight words and the word wall. Extensions on the stories are created using art and musical activities to expand communication skills and their imagination.
