Deer Park Shore Parents, Hello and welcome back to Park Shore Science! I hope you all had a fantastic summer and that you are now ready to get back to all the fun and excitement of the new school year. It was great to get back to the science lab and begin exploring and discovering once again. We reacquainted ourselves with the animals in the room which include a new baby California King Snake as well as our old friends, “Tuck” the Russian tortoise and “Meatball” the frog. The children were very excited to see the animals again. Very soon a new reptile will join our animal family – I will keep you posted!During our first two weeks in Science, we focused on the topic of colors. We talked about primary colors and secondary colors, what they are and how they differ. We did some color chemistry by using pipettes to mix primary colors in order to make secondary colors. The children enjoyed watching the new colors appear as they mixed the colors together. We also did some color chromatography. In this experiment, we watched as water moved through filter paper that contained dots of many colors made by magic markers. In some instances colors were separated into the different colors that make them up and in others colors ran together to create new ones. Some very beautiful creations resulted! We then did some painting, but not with paint or brushes. We used ice cubes! This was an interesting way to put color on paper and an activity that all the kids seemed to enjoy. Finally, we ended our color unit with a very cool color changing experiment. We learned that chemistry can be done with regular household items such as liquid starch, hydrogen peroxide, iodine and vitamin C. We practiced measuring ounces in a measuring cup and milliliters in a graduated cylinder to prepare our different solutions. Ask your children what happened during this experiment and which solution won the battle in the cup! Once again I would like to convey how thrilled I am to be doing science with your children. Their curiosity and enthusiasm is astounding and makes teaching and learning so much fun! Stay tuned for more news from the Park Shore Science room…
Sincerely,
