Dear Parents,

Interactive WritingI am always so proud to inform our parents of all the new and innovative academic experiences your children have been introduced to and currently receiving.  Just recently Rory Cohen our national literacy consultant met with our teaching staff to introduce the newest strategy “Interactive Writing” to promote early reading and writing skills.  Interactive Writing involves a sharing of the pen between teacher and student. The focus of Interactive Writing is on concepts and conventions of print, the sounds in words and how the sounds connect with letters.

Children actively plan and construct the text. For the most part, children also control the writing of the text. The teacher guides this process and provides appropriate pacing, assistance and instruction when needed.

Interactive Writing demonstrates early reading strategies and how words work. Using this concept students start to grasp control of spelling knowledge, and that when connecting letters and words they can construct a sentence. As children become more and more able to write independently, displaying knowledge of concepts of print, writing conventions, sound-letter matching and the spelling of high frequency words, it gives them the confidence in this skill building activity. Interactive Writing has been promoted as the most effective tool for increasing student literacy.

Ms. Cohen will continue to educate our teachers throughout the school year and will continue to create a curriculum that will support and sustain current educational development.

Sincerely,

Dianne  Bob & Chuck
