In keeping with our goal to be the Premier Pre-school and leader in early childhood education, we are proud to announce the addition of our new science program.

This new learning experience will take place in Park Shore's new science lab that will be filled with science equipment necessary to stimulate and educate all of our young scientists. Our children will now add another special to our already progressive academic curriculum. Our science program will help our children develop how science skills, such as: observation, classification, and communication can produce an outcome or a conclusion. Our science lab will be equipped with microscopes, magnets, test tubes and more. It will also be home to a variety of animals and reptiles. Our children will all be responsible for the health and care of our new additions. Plants and other experiments will be incorporated into our program. Imagine a child looking through a microscope and entering into another world that can be seen through a lens or seeing a chick hatch after waiting for several weeks anticipating this amazing event!

This month for our "SEE" enrichment program, we were introduced to animals that hatch.

Once again, using the SMART Board, we were able to see all the different kinds of animals that hatch. This lesson opened up a whole new segment of science. Not only did we learn about the many different animals born from eggs, we also learned about reptiles, amphibians, birds, insects and farm animals. The children loved learning about this subject and I had fun teaching it to them. We read the story Waiting for Wings by Louis Ehlert, a wonderful story about the life cycle of a butterfly. Ms. Ehlert is the illustrator and author of this vibrant and fascinating picture book. The artwork is unique and alive with beautiful colors. The story inspires a sense of wonderment and amazement. We also read Tale of a Tad Pole and The Chick That Wouldn't Hatch Louis Ehlert.

Dear Parents,

What a wonderful time of the year. The weather is changing and the warm sunny days have put many smiles on our children’s faces as they run to play on our playgrounds, our fields, and with Miss Jackie during gym outside in the sunshine. Not only is spring sprouting green grass, budding trees and blooming flowers, your children have also had quite a growth spurt this season. Not only have they grown socially and academically, their growth physically has me amazed.

ANIMALS

This month’s “SEE” program left us all with a little chill in the air. We combined Arctic Animals, the environment that they live in, and introduced the children to glaciers and icebergs. The first animal we explored was the polar bear. We learned that polar bears live in the arctic. They do not stay in one place they travel across the snow and pack ice while looking for food. Sometimes they swim far out to sea in order to find food.Polar bears are the largest bears in the world. Adults weigh 650-1300 pounds;males are always larger than females. A polar bears coat can be from very white to yellowish in color. Their white fur helps them to sneak up on their pray. Seals are the bear’s favorite meal. In the summer polar bears eat plants and berries. They also eat fish, lemmings, and bird eggs.

EXTREME WEATHER

Our topic was “EXTREME WEATHER.” Once again, we traveled on the SMART Board to all the states.

We saw virtual tornados and learned about climate and weather conditions that create this powerful and extraordinary storm. The tornado is the most violent of all the earths’ storms. A tornado is defined as a violently rotating column of air in contact with the ground and a pendant from a cumulonimbus cloud. The components that make the tunnel-like column, is warm and cold air mixing together. When warm air and cold air collide it creates a thunderstorm. Thunderstorms may also develop a tornado. Tornados are very violent and can cause severe damage. Tornados can occur at any time of day, at any time of the year. Tornados usually occur east of the Rocky Mountains. The average speed is 30-70 miles per hour. Tornados typically occur in the mid west where the land is flat; which gives the tornados more room to develop.

Pre-School Schedule Notice

Due to the anticipated poor driving conditions, Park Shore will have a 2 hour delayed opening this morning. Again, there is a 2 hour delay for Monday December 21, 2009. Park Shore will open at 9AM and not provide AM or PM transportation. Please be safe on your way into school.

IN THE JUNGLE

This month our "SEE" program gave your children a virtual Jungle experience. We navigated our way through trees, vines, plants and discovered the most beautiful flowers. We were all surprised to learn that the jungle is full of exotic and mysterious plant life.We also discovered the temperature and climate of the jungle; the rainy seasons and the long periods of drought. Unbelievably, life survives and grows through the worst of all weather conditions.

The best part of all was the animals. Tigers, Chameleons,Parrots, Gorillas, and the Lemur were the showcased animals. Here are some fun facts your children learned.

Park Shore Pre-Schools New Indoor Gym

Our new indoor gym enables us to offer soccer, basketball, and many other ball games in addition to having plenty of room for aerobic workouts, which strengthen gross motor skills.

Our indoor gymnastics program also enhances our childrens' skills as well as create enjoyment.

Balanced Literacy Program

Our Balanced Literacy Program has been given a tremendous boost by the edition of an on-staff literacy consultant.

As part of the program, a different children’s author will be the focus of each month. Students learn about the authors’ backgrounds, where they live and how they grew up, and all through that month a theme corresponding to the author’s writings and life is highlighted. Pre-writing and pre-reading skills are emphasized as the children try to predict what will happen in the story through the cover and illustrations, then read the story to find out how their predictions match up. Students become their own illustrators using sight words and the word wall. Extensions on the stories are created using art and musical activities to expand communication skills and their imagination.

NOCTURNAL ANIMALS

I am so excited to start our Enrichment Program for the 2009-2010 school year. Once again I have had fun learning side-by-side with your children. This month we learned about nocturnal animals. The animal kingdom is a very exciting and amazing subject to study. We learned that Nocturnal animals remain awake and active during the night. The raccoon, fox, coyote, frog, owl and the bat are all animals that fall under this category. We learned many facts about these nocturnal animals and we were very excited to use our Smart Board to enhance each experience. Nocturnal refers to an animal’s preference to sleep through the day and remain active through the night. Though this behavior opposes the nature of the human lifestyle, nocturnal animals add quality to the animal kingdom. Animals like the flying squirrel and mink follow an intermediate schedule or a preference for twilight activity.

The key to this experience is touch. You simply touch the surface to select menus and icons. To write notes, pick up a pen, and write with either the pen or your finger.

Specialized Enrichment Experience

Park Shore continues to give our students the most fulfilling academic and social experiences with the introduction of our “SEE” program, (Specialized Enrichment Experience.) To meet the changing statewide curriculum standards, park shore has introduced this enrichment program inclusive of all of our students. Three and four year old children experience extended academic activity with a weekly focus on developing their problem solving and critical thinking skills.

Each week is focused on a specific topic consistent with our already well-established thematic units.

Our objective is to further enhance the concepts and skills your children will need to be successful in their future learning endeavors. Our students partake in enriching activities in reading, writing, phonics, math and science in a fun filled and challenging learning experience. Classroom teachers extend the concepts in their classrooms to further enhance the learning environment. Physical Education Pre-School Program

Park Shore Country Day School's newly Enhanced Physical Fitness Education Program is second to none. Healthy bodies are as important as healthy minds. A child's physical development through sports, movement, aerobics, and exercise helps to enhance his/her total growth. Physical development, camaraderie, fun and learning are the core of our physical education program at park shore.

Physical development, cooperation, camaraderie and learning are at the core of our Physical Education Program.

A strong body is inexorably linked to a strong mind. Our childrens' physical development through sports and activities is key to the health of both their bodies and brains. In our newly enhanced Physical Fitness Program, pre-schoolers learn and play both team and individual sports, including soccer, tennis, gymnastics, basketball, yoga and t-ball. Park Shore’s facilities, which include both indoor (an indoor gym, three inflatable bouncers, indoor ball pit and obstacle course) and outdoor (soccer field, basketball and tennis courts) are all utilized to their fullest advantage. Each day, children are exposed to a different exciting, fun filled physical activity—we even do Tae Bo!

Computer Skills At Park Shore Pre-School

Our children are growing up in a world dominated by computers.

Our Pre-School Computer Program is designed to give our students a jump start on their Computer Education.

We feel it is very important for our students to learn computer skills at an early age. Our computer program is designed to introduce your child to the fundamentals of how to use a computer and learn from the programs he or she uses.

Our Pre-School Campus has a separate computer room designed with multiple stations for your child to work independently, as well as with a partner.

Your child will learn the different parts of the computer and how to use the mouse and keyboard. Our computer programs are used to teach the basics of the computer, as well as lessons in math, language arts, drawing, and reading skills. Supervised instruction provides one-on-one guidance for use of age-appropriate programs and educational internet experiences. Our goal is for our students to develop a strong foundation of computer skills that will benefit their future in computer education.

Our computer program offers children hands-on experiences and one-on-one teacher/student interaction to introduce them to basic skills

In our state-of-the-art computer lab, your child will have the opportunity to practice their computer skills under the direction of a professional computer teacher. Each class visits twice per week, giving our students the time they need to build their online and internet navigation skills, mouse control and powering on and powering down the unit, all while playing educational and age-appropriate games under supervised, one-on-one guidance.

Park Shore Pre-School offers an Extensive Library & Resource Room

Headed by our on-staff reading consultant, our library and resource room offers your child the opportunity for hands-on experiences with a variety of exciting programs. Your child is able to share and play cooperatively with others, follow directions, improve his/her coordination skills, and understand cause and effect through various activities. Many wonderful stories are read while young imaginations travel to different places. The world of books and learning what they have to offer is explored when your child enters our library and resource room.

Our abundant collection of books, materials, puppets, games, and activities are carefully selected in order to stimulate each child's pre-reading skills and awareness. It is a room filled with excitement and adventure for every child.

The library is a hub of exciting activities for our pre-schoolers to enjoy on a regular basis.

Our new SmartBoard interactive learning system is the latest in classroom technology for students of all ages, and has become a fundamental part of our Library and Resource program. At the pre-school level, children can explore a website, color, learn about shapes, the alphabet or look at pictures and videos on a wide variety of classroom topics. While visiting the library two or three times a week, children can enjoy the hundreds of books on its shelves, play with hand puppets and are given manipulative toys and games such as puzzles and hands on activities to help develop their small motor skills.
